Social Media has now become the greatest opposition of the ruling parties all across the globe. The government has realized that intellectuals, who always had a solid and rebellious view point have found a platform to raise their voices and make themselves heard. The media has also started to broadcast some of the valid and reasonable views posted on these social networking sites be it twitter, facebook or youtube. The way government has handled the social media has varied tremendously from china having total communist approach to US having liberalized and democratic rights granted to its citizens.
India, being the biggest democratic nation, has always been extremely liberal and have allowed its citizens full rights to express. But recent turmoil has left the government stunned. The way Anna Hazzare's anti-graft movement took the country by storm and left everybody tweeting and posting about the corruption issue. This made the government realize the power of social media. Kapil Sibbal, communication minister, has asked social media intermediaries like google and facebook, to screen the data before publishing. This is as impossible as it sounds to screen humungous content daily before publishing. Well the desperation to stop the broadcasting of social issues and individualistic voice has led the government behave in such manner. What disappoints me is that we have chosen these leaders to make decisions on our behalf. Anna hazare's anti-graft movement is just a start and there are many more social media driven movements to come, which would allow us, a normal citizen, to get ourselves heard.
